Equol And Equol Analogs: Their Protective Use In Mammals Against Low-Dose And High-Dose Radiation

It is apparent that a more effective countermeasure is needed to address the dangers posed by low-dose and high-dose radiation via medical/dental diagnostic scans and procedures and especially by radiation exposure to radiation environments, where power plant workers need protection and prevention from disease and impaired biological functions, since the only current treatment of potassium iodide only protects against radioactive iodine, and there aren’t other radioprotective compounds or drugs available.

Since resveratrol has been proposed to protect against radiation exposure in experimental (in vitro and in vivo) studies, but oral dosing is problematic for this treatment, a better polyphenolic compound that is a more powerful antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anti-aging compound compared to resveratrol is equol. In fact, in comparing resveratrol to equol in human gene array studies equol was shown to be more effective than resveratrol for many of the quantified biomarkers (Lephart, 2017).

Another phytochemical compound that is a known powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory agent is astaxanthin. Equol has been shown to be a more powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agent compared to resveratrol and astaxanthin. Equol is a powerful inhibitor of oxidative stress and has other properties of relevance to cellular, tissue, organ and biological function where approximately 50% of equol circulates in the free or unbound form in plasma (Lephart, 2016); selectively binds estrogen receptor beta that has been reported to be protective against prostate and breast cancers and neuroprotective against mitochondrial dysfunction, stroke (cerebral focal ischemia), hypoxia, memory, cognitive function and neurodegenerative diseases.

The Equol technology:

  1. enhances dermal collagen and elastin
  2. inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that breakdown collagen and elastin
  3. decreases negative androgenic hormonal influences and
  4. enhances estrogenic hormonal influences in the skin without the negative perception of estrogen on health
  5. decreases the appearance of fine and medium lines and wrinkles
  6. enhances skin integrity/repair/health by decreasing oxidative stress to counteract chronological and photoaging
  7. enhances/elevates a women’s appearance so they can feel better about themselves
